The Florentine Codex

To answer this question correctly, students must select Fact 2 and Fact 4 and explain how each might lead them to question the reliability of the account. Fact 2 reveals that the director of the Florentine Codex project intended to convert the Indigenous peoples of Mexico to Christianity, which may have limited or skewed the content of the passage. Fact 4 raises the possibility that the Aztecs who worked on the Florentine Codex may have held inaccurate and unfair views of the Otomí, whom the Aztecs had subjugated, which limits the passage’s reliability as evidence.
