20th-Century Spain

To answer this question correctly, students must determine that Document A is from 1947 and that Document B is from 1931. Students must also contextualize the documents by drawing on relevant historical knowledge, such as:

  • The sweeping Republican victory in Spain’s 1931 elections ended the Restoration (Spain’s return to monarchal rule from 1874 to 1931) and established the Second Spanish Republic, a constitutional democracy (1931-1939).
  • The Nationalist victory over the Republicans in the Spanish Civil War marked the beginning of the dictatorship of Francisco Franco (1936-1975).

Level: Proficient

In proficient responses, students will:

  • Select the correct year for each document.
  • Explain that Document A is from 1947 because Spain was governed by a dictatorship following the end of the Spanish Civil War.
  • And explain that Document B is from 1931 because Spain was a democratic republic following the abolition of the monarchy that year.

In proficient responses, students might incorporate other specific historical information, like the fact that Spain had established the short-lived First Spanish Republic in the 19th century; that the Republican government enacted leftist social and economic reforms like those mentioned in Document B; that the Spanish Civil War was fought between the Republicans and Nationalists; that Francisco Franco was the dictator of Spain from the end of the Spanish Civil War until his death in 1975; or that Franco reestablished the Spanish monarchy.

Level: Emergent

Student selects the correct year for each document but only provides a partially correct explanation. For example, the student may correctly contextualize one document but not both or may provide partially incorrect reasoning about both.

Level: Basic

Student misidentifies the year for each document or correctly identifies the years but provides mostly or entirely incorrect explanations for both documents.
