Emancipation

Historians have vigorously debated the topic of emancipation in the United States. While they agree on the basic historical facts, they have come to different conclusions about them. In this lesson, students learn about historians’ differing interpretations of emancipation and analyze historical documents to reason about who was responsible for emancipation.
