Qing Engraving

This assessment measures students’ ability to source and contextualize a document. Students first examine an image commissioned by the Qianlong Emperor of China. They then analyze three historical facts and determine which one might help them determine whether the image is a historically reliable depiction of the battle. To answer this question correctly, students must select Fact 2 and explain how it might lead them to question the reliability of the image. This fact reveals that the emperor commissioned the prints to commemorate his victories, which may have led the artist to portray the battle in a way that was favorable to the Qing army.  

Level: Proficient

Student selects the correct fact and explains how it casts doubt on the reliability of the document.

Level: Emergent

Student selects the correct fact but does not provide an adequate or complete explanation of how it would lead them to question the reliability of the document.

Level: Basic

Student does not select the correct fact or selects a correct fact but does not provide a relevant explanation.
