The Cuban Missile Crisis of October 1962 pushed the United States and the Soviet Union to the brink of nuclear war. In this lesson, students examine letters between President Kennedy and Soviet Chairman Kruschev and a cable from Russian Ambassador Dobrynin to address the question: Why did the Russians pull their missiles out of Cuba?

You've made my life as a teacher so easy. It is end of the year, and I have students who are scrambling to make up lost work. I turn these into packets for students to finish on their own. They are happy. I am happy. And they learn really good material.
You can find the video clip from the lesson plan on YouTube by typing "Hour of Maximum Danger" into the search bar.
Good lesson. It really gives the students a lot to think about and promotes discussion. I will use this lesson again.
I have the ability to log in to the discovery education site and there is a message saying that it has been removed. I started using a clip called "Resolving Kennedy's Legacy". Any short clip regarding the crisis will probably work as long as it leaves out the part about missiles in Turkey. I am using the lesson with International Baccalaureate 12th graders and they loved it.
Hi wadekrug, we appreciate your feedback and will take it into account when developing future materials. The videos are intended to establish relevant background information, and as such can be readily substituted by a) a lecture, b) the textbook, or c) another segment of video. In short, the particular clips that we have selected are not essential to the lessons.
This is a good lesson, the only problem is that I could not access the "Discovery Education" video. What do we do if we don't have access to this site to watch the videos?
