In order for students to effectively navigate the news, they need to understand the differences between news stories and opinion columns. This task assesses a student’s ability to recognize and differentiate news and opinion articles in an online format.
Students must first recognize the genre of each item; they must then reason about the relative strengths and weaknesses of each genre for finding facts on a particular topic. Successful students provide cogent explanations for why the news article would be a better source for locating facts about year-round schooling. Although there are opinion articles that provide facts, this assessment seeks to address the basic differences between news and opinion.
